Congenital Hypothyroidism (Toy Fox Terrier)(CHG)
Also known as: Congenital Hypothyroidism with Goiter · Kongenitale Hypothyreose mit Kropfbildung · Congenital Goiter Toy Fox Terrier · Angeborene Schilddrüsenunterfunktion
Overview
What it is
This is an inherited disorder of the endocrine system where the thyroid gland fails to produce enough essential hormones due to a genetic defect. These hormones are critical for normal growth and metabolic function. Without them, the dog's development is severely impaired, and the thyroid gland itself may swell, creating a visible lump in the neck known as a goiter.
How it presents
Symptoms typically appear early in puppyhood, around three to four weeks of age. Owners will likely notice stunted growth, extreme lethargy, delayed motor skills, a disproportionately large head, and a palpable swelling in the neck area.
Treatment
The condition is incurable but can be managed successfully with lifelong, daily thyroid hormone replacement therapy and regular blood monitoring. Lifetime treatment and veterinary care costs are estimated to range between €2,000 and €5,000.
