Hypospadias
Also known as: Hypospadie · Urethral hypospadias · Harnröhrenspaltung · Congenital hypospadias
Overview
What it is
Hypospadias is a birth defect affecting the male urinary and reproductive systems where the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body, does not develop fully. Instead of opening at the tip of the penis, the urinary opening is located further back along the underside of the shaft, the scrotum, or the groin. This abnormal placement can cause urine to spray or pool against the surrounding skin.
How it presents
Owners typically notice symptoms in young puppies, often starting shortly after birth or during weaning. Common signs include wet fur around the genitals, constant urine dribbling, red or irritated skin from urine scalding, and recurrent urinary tract infections.
Treatment
The condition is treatable through a one-time surgical procedure to reconstruct the passage or create a new opening for urine flow. This corrective surgery typically costs between 1,000 and 4,000 EUR depending on the severity of the malformation.
