Hypogonadism
Also known as: Hypogonadismus · Gonadenunterfunktion · Underactive gonads · Congenital hypogonadism · Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism
Overview
What it is
Hypogonadism is a hormonal disorder where the gonads—the ovaries in females or testes in males—fail to produce adequate levels of sex hormones. This underactivity directly impacts the endocrine system, which is responsible for regulating growth and reproduction. As a result, the dog's normal sexual development and reproductive capabilities are significantly impaired.
How it presents
Signs usually become noticeable around the age of puberty, often presenting as a lack of heat cycles in females, underdeveloped external genitalia, or infertility. Some dogs may also exhibit a reduced sex drive, altered physical growth, or general lethargy.
Treatment
This is a lifelong condition that cannot be cured, but it can be managed with ongoing hormone replacement therapy and regular veterinary check-ups. The cumulative cost for lifetime medications and monitoring blood tests typically ranges from 1,000 to 4,000 EUR.
