Hyperparathyroidism(PHPT)
Also known as: Primary Hyperparathyroidism · Hyperparathyreoidismus · Primärer Hyperparathyreoidismus · Nebenschilddrüsenüberfunktion
Overview
What it is
This condition involves the overactivity of the parathyroid glands, which are small endocrine glands located in the neck. These glands produce an excess of parathyroid hormone, causing calcium levels in the blood to rise abnormally high and potentially damage vital organs like the kidneys.
How it presents
Affected dogs typically begin showing symptoms in middle to older age. Owners may notice increased thirst, more frequent urination, decreased energy levels, or signs of bladder stones.
Treatment
The disease is treatable and often cured through a one-time surgical procedure to remove the affected gland. This treatment, including necessary postoperative monitoring of calcium levels, typically costs between €1,500 and €4,500.
How it's tested
PHPT DNA-Test(PHPT)
