Hydrops fetalis
Also known as: Fetal hydrops · Water puppies · Wasserwelpen-Syndrom · Canine anasarca
Overview
What it is
Hydrops fetalis is a severe developmental condition where abnormal amounts of fluid build up within a puppy's tissues and body cavities before birth. This widespread fluid accumulation affects multiple organ systems, preventing normal development in the womb. Because there is currently no genetic test available, the exact underlying cause and inheritance pattern remain unknown.
How it presents
The condition is apparent at birth, with affected puppies showing extreme, doughy swelling across their entire body. These puppies are typically stillborn or pass away shortly after birth.
Treatment
The condition is fatal and untreatable for the puppies. However, it often requires an emergency caesarean section for the mother to resolve birth complications, resulting in one-time veterinary costs ranging from 500 to 2000 EUR.
