Heterotopic ossification
Also known as: Heterotope Ossifikation · Myositis ossificans · Extra-skeletal ossification · Heterotopic bone formation · Weichteilverknöcherung
Overview
What it is
Heterotopic ossification is a condition where true bone tissue abnormally develops inside soft tissues like muscles, tendons, or ligaments where it does not belong. This misplaced bone growth occurs within the musculoskeletal system, typically triggered by trauma, surgery, or deep tissue injury. Over time, these hard deposits can restrict the normal movement of the surrounding joints and muscles.
How it presents
Owners usually notice progressive stiffness, lameness, localized swelling, and pain in the affected area, which typically appear weeks to months after an injury or surgery. Because this condition is triggered by physical trauma rather than genetics, it can develop in dogs of any age.
Treatment
While the condition can be managed with anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, or surgical removal, there is a high risk that the bone tissue will grow back. Treatment costs generally range from 500 to 4000 EUR depending on whether surgery is required.
