Perineal hernia
Also known as: Perinealhernie · Dammbruch · Perinealbruch · hernia perinealis · Dammhernie
Overview
What it is
A perineal hernia occurs when the muscles of the pelvic diaphragm weaken or tear, allowing pelvic organs and tissues like the bladder or intestines to push into the area next to the anus. This structural failure in the pelvic region can disrupt normal digestive and urinary functions. It is also commonly referred to as a Dammhernie.
How it presents
Owners typically notice a visible swelling next to the anus, accompanied by straining or pain during bowel movements. It primarily affects older, intact male dogs. If the bladder slips into the hernia, it can cause a life-threatening inability to urinate.
Treatment
Treatment requires a one-time surgical reconstruction of the pelvic wall, usually combined with castration to prevent the hernia from returning. The procedure is complex and typically costs between 1,500 and 4,500 EUR.
