Inguinal hernia
Also known as: Inguinalhernie · Leistenbruch · Hernia inguinalis · Weichenbruch
Overview
What it is
An inguinal hernia occurs when there is a weakness or tear in the muscles of the lower abdominal wall near the groin, known as the inguinal canal. This opening allows abdominal contents, such as fat, intestines, or the uterus, to push through and protrude under the skin. It primarily affects the abdominal wall and can involve the digestive or reproductive organs depending on what tissue protrudes.
How it presents
Owners will typically notice a soft, visible bulge or swelling in the dog's groin area. This can appear in young puppies as a birth defect, or develop later in life, especially in adult, pregnant female dogs.
Treatment
The condition is highly treatable with a one-time surgical procedure to repair the tear and prevent organs from becoming trapped. The cost for this surgery generally ranges from 600 to 2500 EUR.
