Hemimelia
Also known as: Radial hemimelia · Tibial hemimelia · Congenital limb reduction · Gliedmaßenhemimelie · Angeborenes Fehlen von Gliedmaßenknochen
Overview
What it is
Hemimelia is a congenital skeletal deformity where a portion of a limb bone, such as the radius in the front leg or the tibia in the hind leg, is incompletely formed or entirely missing. This developmental error occurs in the womb and affects the musculoskeletal system, leading to severe shortening or distortion of the affected leg. Because the bone structure is incomplete, the normal joints and muscles of the limb cannot function properly.
How it presents
The physical deformity is present at birth and becomes highly noticeable as a visible limb shortening or abnormal angle when the puppy first attempts to walk. Owners will observe significant lameness, an unusual gait, or a complete inability to bear weight on the affected leg.
Treatment
While the missing bone cannot be replaced, treatment focuses on improving mobility through orthopedic aids, physical therapy, or surgical amputation of the limb. Management typically involves a combination of one-time surgeries and lifelong supportive care, with estimated costs ranging from 1,000 to 6,000 EUR.
