Hemophagocytic syndrome(HLH)
Also known as: Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis · Hämophagozytische Lymphohistiozytose · Macrophage activation syndrome · MAS · Haemophagocytic syndrome
Overview
What it is
Hemophagocytic syndrome is a severe disorder of the immune system where the body's defense cells abnormally activate and begin destroying its own healthy blood cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. This destructive process primarily occurs in the spleen, bone marrow, and liver, leading to a critical shortage of vital blood components.
How it presents
Owners may notice sudden and severe weakness, high fever, pale gums, and tiny purple or red spots on the skin or gums caused by bleeding. These symptoms typically develop rapidly.
Treatment
This condition requires immediate, intensive medical stabilization, including immunosuppressive therapy and potentially blood transfusions. Treatment is highly intensive and typically costs between €2,000 and €7,000, though the long-term prognosis is often guarded.
