Hemangiosarcoma(HSA)
Also known as: Hämangiosarkom · Angiosarcoma · Canine Hemangiosarcoma · Malignant Hemangioendothelioma · Haemangiosarcoma
Overview
What it is
Haemangiosarcoma is a severe cancer that develops from the cells lining the blood vessels, most commonly affecting the spleen, liver, or heart. Because the tumor weakens these vessel walls, it frequently leads to dangerous internal bleeding. When the heart is involved, veterinarians typically use a cardiac ultrasound, also known as an echocardiogram, to identify tumor masses in the right atrium.
How it presents
This disease primarily affects middle-aged and older dogs, often progressing silently without any early symptoms. Owners usually first notice signs when a tumor ruptures, leading to sudden weakness, pale gums, or collapse from internal blood loss.
Treatment
Treatment typically involves major surgery to remove the primary tumor followed by chemotherapy, though this is generally palliative to extend life rather than a permanent cure. The total cost for diagnostics, surgery, and supportive care generally ranges from 2,000 to 7,000 EUR.
