German Shepherd pyoderma(GSP)
Also known as: German Shepherd deep pyoderma · Schäferhund-Pyodermie · Deep pyoderma of German Shepherds · Schäferhundpyodermie
Overview
What it is
German Shepherd pyoderma is a severe, deep-seated bacterial infection of the skin, which is the body's primary protective barrier. It is believed to stem from an inherited immune system dysfunction or an underlying allergy that prevents the dog's natural defenses from controlling normal skin bacteria. Because this is a complex, multi-gene condition, there are currently no genetic tests available to screen for it.
How it presents
The condition typically starts to show in middle-aged dogs. Owners will usually notice intense itching, hair loss, pus-filled bumps, and painful, deep open sores on the back, thighs, and base of the tail.
Treatment
While the condition cannot be cured, it is treatable with lifelong management using antibiotics, specialized shampoos, and allergy medications. The estimated cost for this ongoing care ranges from €1,500 to €6,000.
