Gastrointestinal stromal tumour(GIST)
Also known as: Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor · Gastrointestinaler Stromatumor · Gastrointestinal spindle cell tumor · Intestinaler Stromatumor
Overview
What it is
A gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is a serious type of cancer that develops in the digestive tract, most commonly in the stomach or intestines. It originates from specialized pacemaker cells in the gut wall that normally control the contractions of the digestive system. Because these tumors cannot be identified through DNA testing, diagnosis requires a tissue biopsy analyzed under a microscope with specialized staining techniques.
How it presents
These tumors typically affect older dogs. Owners may notice signs like vomiting, weight loss, dark or bloody stools, or sudden weakness caused by internal bleeding from the tumor.
Treatment
Treatment usually involves surgical removal of the tumor, sometimes followed by targeted medical therapy. While potentially treatable, management is complex and typically costs between €2,000 and €8,000.
