Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Variant 1 (Poodle)(EDS)
Also known as: Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Variant 1 · Kutane Asthenie · Cutaneous Asthenia · Rubber Skin Disease · Kollagendysplasie · …
Overview
What it is
This is an inherited connective tissue disorder caused by a genetic defect in the TNXB gene, which affects how the body produces and structures collagen. Collagen is a crucial structural protein that acts like a supportive framework for the skin and other tissues. In this classical-like variant, the lack of functional collagen leads to extremely fragile, loose, and hyperextensible skin.
How it presents
Owners will typically notice that the dog's skin is unusually stretchy, loose, and fragile starting from puppyhood. The skin tears very easily during normal play or minor contact, leading to frequent, deep wounds that require medical attention.
Treatment
There is no cure for this genetic condition, meaning management is lifelong and focuses on protecting the skin from injury and promptly treating wounds. Lifetime veterinary care, including wound suturing and protective gear, typically costs between 1,500 and 6,000 EUR.
