Dermoid sinus(DS)
Also known as: Dermoidsinus · Pilonidalsinus · Haarnestgrübchen · Dermoid cyst · Dermoidzyste · …
Overview
What it is
A dermoid sinus is a congenital skin defect where a tube-like channel fails to close properly during embryonic development, extending from the skin's surface down into deeper tissues or even the spinal cord. This condition primarily affects the skin and nervous system along the midline of the neck and back. While genetic risk tests exist to screen for the underlying ridge gene duplication, a physical examination by a veterinarian, known as clinical palpation, remains the gold standard for diagnosing an actual sinus.
How it presents
Owners typically notice this condition in young puppies, often at birth or within the first few weeks of life, as a firm, thread-like cord under the skin along the spine. If the sinus becomes infected, it can cause swelling, discharge, and pain, while deeper involvement near the spinal cord can lead to stiffness or difficulty walking.
Treatment
The condition is treatable through a one-time surgical procedure to completely remove the sinus tract. Depending on the complexity of the surgery and whether it involves the spinal cord, treatment costs typically range from 1200 to 5000 EUR.
How it's tested
