Delayed postoperative hemorrhage(DEPOH)
Also known as: DEPH · Delayed postoperative bleeding · Postoperative fibrinolytic syndrome · Verzögerte postoperative Blutung · Sighthound bleeding disorder · …
Overview
What it is
Delayed postoperative hemorrhage (DEPOH) is an inherited blood clotting disorder affecting the circulatory system. In affected dogs, the normal blood clots that form to seal surgical wounds break down prematurely. This leads to unexpected bleeding hours or days after a surgical procedure has completed.
How it presents
Owners will typically notice symptoms 24 to 48 hours after a surgery, which include continuous oozing from the incision site, severe bruising, or localized swelling. Because it is triggered by surgery, signs can appear at any age when a dog undergoes its first medical procedure.
Treatment
The condition can be prevented with specific medication given before scheduled surgeries, but emergency treatment for active bleeding may require blood transfusions and intensive care. Depending on whether preventive medication or emergency intervention is needed, treatment costs typically range from 150 to 3000 EUR.
How it's tested
Delayed Postoperative Hemorrhage (DEPH) DNA-Test(DEPH)
Primary testDNA testEin DNA-Test identifiziert die Mutation im SERPINF2-Gen, welche für den Mangel an Alpha-2-Antiplasmin und die damit verbundenen verzögerten Nachblutungen verantwortlich ist.
