Cystinuria Risk Factor Type 3 Variant 3 (Bulldog)(Cyst3-3)
Also known as: Cystinuria Type III Variant 3 · Bulldog Cystinuria · Cystinurie Typ 3 · Cystinurie Typ III Variante 3 · Cystine Urolithiasis
Overview
What it is
This is an inherited metabolic disorder affecting the kidneys, where the body fails to properly reabsorb the amino acid cystine, a protein building block, from the urine. Instead of being filtered back into the bloodstream, excess cystine accumulates in the urinary tract. Over time, this buildup clumps together to form painful stones in the bladder and kidneys.
How it presents
Symptoms typically appear in adult dogs, especially males, and include straining to urinate, blood in the urine, or frequent, unproductive urination attempts. A complete blockage of the urinary tract is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate veterinary attention.
Treatment
Management is lifelong and involves a specialized diet, increased hydration, and potentially castration to reduce stone formation. If a urinary blockage occurs, emergency surgery is necessary, with overall treatment costs ranging from €1,500 to €7,000.
