Cystinuria, type II-A
Also known as: Cystinuria Type II-A · Cystinurie Typ II-A · SLC3A1-associated cystinuria · Canine Cystinuria Type II-A · Cystine urolithiasis Type II-A · …
Overview
What it is
This is an inherited metabolic kidney disorder where the kidneys fail to reabsorb an amino acid called cystine from the urine. Because the cystine remains in the urine, it clumps together to form painful stones in the bladder and urinary tract. This genetic defect is inherited in an autosomal-dominant manner, meaning a dog only needs to inherit one copy of the mutated gene to be affected.
How it presents
Owners may notice signs of urinary discomfort, such as blood in the urine, straining to urinate, or frequent attempts to urinate, which typically appear in young to middle-aged dogs. If a stone completely blocks the urinary tract, it becomes a sudden, life-threatening emergency.
Treatment
While the underlying condition is lifelong and requires ongoing management with a special diet and medication, surgical removal of stones may be necessary if a blockage occurs. Lifetime management and potential surgeries typically cost between 2,000 and 8,000 EUR.
