Cushing syndrome, ACTH-independent, adrenal-dependent hypercortisolism(ADH)
Also known as: Adrenal-dependent hypercortisolism · ACTH-independent Cushing's syndrome · Adrenales Cushing-Syndrom · Primary hypercortisolism · Adrenocortical tumor-induced Cushing's
Overview
What it is
Adrenal-dependent Cushing's syndrome occurs when a tumor in the adrenal glands, which are small hormone-producing organs near the kidneys, produces excessive amounts of the stress hormone cortisol. This overproduction happens independently of the brain's normal regulatory signals, leading to a chronic hormone overload. The constantly elevated cortisol levels disrupt the dog's metabolism and can gradually damage multiple organ systems.
How it presents
This condition typically develops in older dogs. Owners usually notice symptoms such as excessive thirst and urination, a significantly increased appetite, a sagging, pot-bellied appearance, hair loss, and thin, fragile skin.
Treatment
The condition can be managed either through surgical removal of the affected adrenal gland or with lifelong daily medication. Due to the need for regular blood monitoring and specialized care, treatment costs typically range from 3,000 to 10,000 EUR.
How it's tested
Abdomen-Ultraschall der Nebennieren(Nebennieren-US)
Primary testUltrasoundEin Abdomen-Ultraschall dient der Beurteilung der Nebennieren, um einen einseitigen Nebennierentumor (typisch für ADH) von einer beidseitigen Vergrößerung abzugrenzen.
