Conotruncal heart malformations(CTD)
Also known as: Conotruncal Heart Defects · Konotrunkale Herzfehler · Conotruncal Malformations · Congenital Conotruncal Heart Disease
Overview
What it is
Conotruncal heart malformations are congenital birth defects affecting the heart's outflow tracts and major blood vessels, such as the aorta and pulmonary artery. These structural abnormalities disrupt the normal flow of blood, which impairs the body's oxygen supply. This condition affects the cardiovascular system and develops during early embryonic growth.
How it presents
Symptoms typically appear during puppyhood and include extreme lethargy, shortness of breath, stunted growth, and bluish gums. Affected dogs usually have a very low tolerance for exercise and may experience sudden collapse.
Treatment
Management may involve lifelong palliative medication, though corrective or palliative surgery is sometimes an option. Treatment costs typically range from €1,500 to €8,000, and affected dogs often have a reduced life expectancy.
