Congenital hypotrichosis
Also known as: Angeborene Hypotrichose · Congenital alopecia · Angeborener Haarausfall · Hereditary hypotrichosis · Hypotrichosis congenita
Overview
What it is
Congenital hypotrichosis is an inherited skin condition where the hair follicles do not develop properly, leading to abnormal hair growth or hair loss. This genetic defect affects the integumentary system (the skin and hair) while leaving the rest of the dog's internal organs and general health completely unaffected.
How it presents
Owners will typically notice hairless patches starting in puppyhood, often on the head, ears, and belly. Over time, the exposed skin may become darker, scaly, and more vulnerable to sunburn or cold temperatures.
Treatment
There is no cure for this condition, and the hair loss is permanent. Management is lifelong and focuses on protecting the sensitive skin with mild shampoos and sunscreens, with typical lifetime costs ranging from 300 to 1500 EUR.
