Carpal subluxation
Also known as: Karpalsubluxation · Carpal subluxation in dogs · Carpal laxity syndrome · X-linked carpal subluxation · Karpale Instabilität
Overview
What it is
Carpal subluxation is an inherited skeletal condition affecting the wrist joint, or carpus, of a dog's front legs, where the bones fail to align properly and slip out of place. This instability is caused by an X-linked genetic defect, meaning it is carried on the X chromosome and primarily affects male dogs. The misalignment leads to chronic strain, inflammation, and progressive damage within the joint.
How it presents
Symptoms usually become visible in young puppies at just a few months of age, presenting as a flat or sinking appearance of the front paws. Owners may also notice limping, a wobbly gait, and a clear reluctance to run or play due to joint pain.
Treatment
While mild cases are sometimes managed with splints and physical therapy, a surgical joint fusion is often required to permanently stabilize the wrist. This major, one-time surgical procedure typically costs between €1,500 and €5,000 and involves a long recovery period.
