Brachydactyly
Also known as: Brachydaktylie · Short digits · Kurzzehigkeit · Canine brachydactyly · Shortened toes
Overview
What it is
Brachydactyly is an inherited skeletal condition characterized by abnormally short toe bones, known as phalanges, in the paws. This developmental malformation is caused by an autosomal-recessive genetic trait affecting the skeletal system. It generally only impacts individual digits and does not impair the overall function of the dog's limbs.
How it presents
Owners will typically notice visibly shortened toes on one or more paws, which is apparent from birth or early puppyhood. In almost all cases, this physical variation does not cause pain, limping, or discomfort.
Treatment
Treatment is rarely necessary because the condition does not affect the dog's quality of life. If minor supportive care or specialized veterinary nail management is required, costs typically range from 150 to 800 EUR.
