Dal blood group system(Dal)
Also known as: Dal blood group · Dal antigen deficiency · Dal-Antigen-Mangel · Dog Erythrocyte Antigen Dal · Dal-Blutgruppe · …
Overview
What it is
The Dal blood group system involves a specific protein, or antigen, located on the surface of a dog's red blood cells. Dogs with an autosomal recessive genetic variation lack this protein, making them Dal-negative. If a Dal-negative dog receives a blood transfusion containing Dal-positive blood, their immune system will recognize the foreign protein and attack the donor red blood cells.
How it presents
Dal-negative dogs are completely healthy and show no symptoms in their daily lives. The condition only becomes apparent if the dog requires a blood transfusion, where an incompatible match can cause fever, weakness, or circulatory collapse at any age.
Treatment
While the blood type itself cannot be changed, complications are entirely preventable by performing blood typing and cross-matching before any transfusion. Managing compatibility testing or treating an adverse reaction typically costs between 150 and 800 EUR.
How it's tested
