Respiratory distress syndrome(RDS)
Also known as: Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome · NRDS · Surfactant Protein B Deficiency · SFTPB-associated RDS · Lungenreifungsstörung der Welpen · …
Overview
What it is
This is a severe inherited respiratory disease affecting the lungs, often associated with a genetic defect in surfactant production. Surfactant is a natural protective fluid that allows the lungs' tiny air sacs, called alveoli, to expand and absorb oxygen. Without it, these air sacs collapse, making normal breathing impossible.
How it presents
Symptoms appear almost immediately after birth or within the first few hours of life. Affected puppies show severe breathing distress, rapid panting, and blue-tinted gums or mucous membranes due to oxygen deprivation.
Treatment
This condition is currently untreatable and is rapidly fatal. Veterinary costs typically range from 100 to 500 EUR, which generally covers initial supportive care and humane euthanasia to prevent suffering.
How it's tested
Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) DNA-Test(RDS)
Primary testDNA testDer DNA-Test identifiziert die Mutation im SFTPB-Gen, die für den Mangel an Surfactant-Protein B und das daraus resultierende Atemnotsyndrom (z.B. beim Whippet) verantwortlich ist.
Issuing body: Labogen
Result scheme: Clear/Carrier/Affected
Surfactant-Metabolismus-Dysfunktion DNA-Test(SMD)
Primary testDNA testEin molekularbiologischer Gentest (PCR) zum Nachweis der Mutation im betroffenen Gen (z.B. SFTPB), die für den Mangel an funktionellem Surfactant verantwortlich ist.
Issuing body: Labogen
Result scheme: Clear/Carrier/Affected
