SACS-related spastic ataxia(ARSACS)
Also known as: Spastic ataxia (SACS-related) · Autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay · Sacsin-related ataxia · Spastische Ataxie
Overview
What it is
This inherited neurological condition, also known as ARSACS, is caused by a genetic mutation that leads to progressive damage in the cerebellum and spinal cord. The cerebellum is the part of the brain responsible for coordinating movement, and its deterioration disrupts communication between the brain and the muscles. This results in a gradual loss of voluntary muscle control and coordination.
How it presents
Symptoms typically become noticeable during puppyhood or adolescence. Owners will usually observe a stiff, uncoordinated gait, frequent stumbling, and difficulty maintaining balance, which gradually worsen over time.
Treatment
There is no cure for this progressive disease, and treatment is limited to lifelong supportive care such as physical therapy and pain management. Managing this condition typically involves ongoing veterinary and supportive costs ranging from 1,500 to 6,000 EUR.
How it's tested
SACS-DNA-Test (Spastische Ataxie)(SACS)
Primary testDNA testEin DNA-Test identifiziert die Mutation im SACS-Gen, die für die spastische Ataxie verantwortlich ist, und ermöglicht den Nachweis von betroffenen und Trägertieren.
