KCNIP4-related cerebellar ataxia(SCA)
Also known as: KCNIP4 spinocerebellar ataxia · Spinocerebellar Ataxia KCNIP4 · Cerebellar Ataxia KCNIP4 · KCNIP4 ataxia · Ataxia, cerebellar, KCNIP4-related
Overview
What it is
This is an inherited neurological disorder affecting the brain, specifically the cerebellum, which is the area responsible for coordinating movement. A genetic mutation causes the nerve cells in this region to degenerate and fail to function properly. As these cells break down, the dog loses its ability to control its balance and physical actions.
How it presents
Symptoms such as uncoordinated walking, body tremors, and a loss of balance typically become noticeable in puppies between 6 and 12 weeks of age. These coordination issues tend to worsen rapidly.
Treatment
There is no cure for this progressive condition, and care is focused on keeping the dog comfortable. Diagnostic and palliative care costs typically range from 500 to 2000 EUR. Because the disease is severe and worsens quickly, early euthanasia is often considered to prevent suffering.
