Arrhythmogenic left ventricular cardiomyopathy(ALVC)
Also known as: Arrhythmogene linksventrikuläre Kardiomyopathie · Left-dominant arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy · Linksventrikuläre arrhythmogene Kardiomyopathie · Cardiomyopathy, arrhythmogenic left ventricular
Overview
What it is
This is a severe heart disease where the muscle tissue of the left ventricle, which is the heart's main pumping chamber, is gradually replaced by fat and fibrous scar tissue. This replacement disrupts the heart's normal electrical signals, leading to irregular and potentially dangerous heartbeats known as arrhythmias.
How it presents
Affected dogs typically do not show symptoms until middle age, when owners may notice weakness, exercise intolerance, or fainting spells. In some cases, sudden collapse or sudden death can occur without prior warning.
Treatment
The condition is incurable and requires lifelong daily medication to manage the heart's rhythm. Regular lifelong monitoring with a cardiologist is necessary, with expected treatment and diagnostic costs ranging from €2,000 to €7,500.
How it's tested
