Amelia
Also known as: Congenital amelia · Complete limb agenesis · Angeborenes Fehlen von Gliedmaßen · Gliedmaßenaplasie · Ectromelia · …
Overview
What it is
Amelia is a severe congenital condition characterized by the complete failure of one or more limbs to develop during embryonic growth in the womb. This skeletal system disorder results in a puppy being born entirely missing one or more legs, which can include bilateral anterior amelia, the complete absence of both front legs.
How it presents
The condition is immediately obvious at birth, as the puppy will be missing one or more legs. Owners will notice significant mobility challenges or an inability to walk normally as the puppy grows.
Treatment
While the missing limbs cannot be cured, mobility can be managed through lifelong supportive care such as custom wheelchairs, prosthetics, and physical therapy. These supportive treatments are lifelong and typically cost between €1,500 and €8,000.
