Adult Onset Neuropathy(AON)
Also known as: Adult-Onset Neuropathy · AON bei Cocker Spanieln · Spätbeginnende Neuropathie · Hereditäre sensorisch-motorische Neuropathie
Overview
What it is
Adult Onset Neuropathy is an inherited neurological disease that affects the peripheral nervous system, which consists of the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. Over time, the protective outer sheath of these nerves breaks down, disrupting the electrical signals sent from the brain to the muscles. This gradual nerve damage eventually leads to muscle weakness and loss of control.
How it presents
Owners typically first notice symptoms between 7 and 9 years of age, starting as weakness, wobbliness, or uncoordinated movement in the hind legs. As the disease progresses, this weakness gradually spreads to affect the front legs as well.
Treatment
There is no cure for this progressive condition, so management focuses on lifelong supportive care, including physiotherapy and mobility aids. The lifetime cost for managing this disease typically ranges from 1,500 to 5,000 EUR.
