Achromatopsia-3, CNGB3-related(ACHM)
Also known as: Day Blindness · Cone Degeneration · CNGB3-ACHM · Tagblindheit · Zapfendegeneration · …
Overview
What it is
Achromatopsia-3 is an inherited eye disorder affecting the retina, which is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. It is caused by a genetic mutation that prevents the cone photoreceptors—the cells responsible for detecting bright light—from functioning properly. Consequently, affected dogs experience severely impaired vision in bright daylight, while their vision remains normal in dim light.
How it presents
Symptoms typically become noticeable in puppies between 8 and 12 weeks of age. Owners may observe their dog squinting, avoiding bright sunlight, or bumping into obstacles during the day, while navigating normally at night.
Treatment
While the condition is incurable, it is painless and does not worsen over time. Lifelong management, such as using specialized tinted dog goggles for outdoor activities, typically costs between 200 and 1000 EUR.
