Ocular anomalies
Also known as: Eye anomalies · Congenital eye defects · Kongenitale Augenanomalien · Anomalies of the eye · Ocular disorders · …
Overview
What it is
Ocular anomalies are a group of congenital malformations, meaning they are present from birth, that affect various structures of the dog's eye such as the retina, lens, or cornea. These developmental defects alter the normal structure of the visual system, potentially impacting how light is focused or how the eye functions. The condition is complex and can range from minor physical irregularities to severe structural changes.
How it presents
Symptoms are usually noticeable in puppyhood and can include visible cloudiness in the eye, squinting, or signs of poor vision like bumping into objects. In severe cases, a young dog may experience early-onset blindness.
Treatment
While these developmental malformations are generally incurable, some cases can be managed with lifelong eye drops or corrective surgery to improve comfort. Treatment and monitoring costs typically range from €500 to €4,000 depending on the severity.
