Thoracolumbar myelopathy
Also known as: Pug myelopathy · Constrictive myelopathy · Thoracolumbar arachnoid fibrosis · Meningeal fibrosis
Overview
What it is
Thoracolumbar myelopathy is a severe disease affecting the spinal cord in the mid-to-lower back, known as the thoracic and lumbar regions. It occurs when the spinal cord is compressed or damaged by issues like slipped discs or spinal instability, which disrupts the nerve signals traveling between the brain and the back half of the body. This disruption impairs the dog's ability to coordinate its hind legs and control bodily functions.
How it presents
Owners typically notice a wobbly or uncoordinated walk in the hind legs, weakness, back pain, or a sudden inability to stand. Depending on the underlying cause, these symptoms can appear suddenly or develop gradually, often first showing up in middle-aged to older dogs.
Treatment
Depending on the severity, treatment can range from conservative medical management to complex spinal surgery followed by physical rehabilitation. While a single surgery can sometimes resolve the issue, some dogs require long-term care, with typical costs ranging from 1,500 to 7,500 EUR.
