Reduced glutathione deficiency, unclassified(GSHD)
Also known as: Glutathione deficiency · GSH deficiency · Glutathionmangel · Erythrocyte glutathione deficiency · Congenital glutathione deficiency
Overview
What it is
This condition is an inherited deficiency of reduced glutathione, which is a vital antioxidant that protects red blood cells from damage. Without enough of this protective molecule, the red blood cells are easily destroyed by oxidative stress, which is chemical damage caused by unstable molecules in the body.
How it presents
Affected dogs typically show signs of anemia, such as weakness, pale gums, and a yellowish tint to the skin or eyes. These symptoms are often triggered by exposure to certain medications or toxins and can become apparent at any age.
Treatment
The condition is incurable but can be managed long-term by avoiding oxidative triggers and administering antioxidant supplements. Lifelong care, including regular blood monitoring, typically costs between 1,000 and 4,000 EUR.
