Distichiasis
Also known as: Distichiase · Zusätzliche Wimpern · Extra eyelashes · Distichien · Abnormal eyelash growth · …
Overview
What it is
Distichiasis is an eye condition where extra eyelashes grow from the meibomian glands, which are the oil glands along the edge of the eyelid. These abnormal hairs point inward and rub directly against the cornea, the clear outer surface of the eye. This constant friction causes mechanical irritation and can damage the sensitive ocular surface.
How it presents
Owners typically notice signs of eye discomfort, such as squinting, excessive tearing, redness, and the dog rubbing its face. These symptoms usually first appear within the dog's first year of life.
Treatment
The condition is treatable, often requiring a procedure like cryotherapy (freezing) or electrolysis under general anesthesia to permanently destroy the hair follicles. While some dogs only need a single procedure, others may require follow-up treatments if new hairs emerge. Treatment costs typically range from 300 to 2500 EUR.
