Caruncular trichiasis
Also known as: Trichiasis der Karunkel · Medial canthal trichiasis · Caruncle trichiasis
Overview
What it is
Caruncular trichiasis is an eye condition where fine hairs abnormally grow from the caruncle, which is the small pink nodule located in the inner corner of the eye. Because of their position, these hairs rub directly against the cornea, the sensitive clear surface of the eyeball. This constant friction causes mechanical irritation and chronic inflammation of the eye.
How it presents
Symptoms typically appear during puppyhood or adolescence as persistent tearing, brown staining of the fur in the corner of the eye, and frequent blinking or squinting. Owners may also notice the dog rubbing its face or pawing at its eyes.
Treatment
The condition is highly treatable and usually cured permanently through a one-time procedure, such as laser or cryotherapy, to destroy the hair follicles. The total cost for this treatment typically ranges from 300 to 1000 EUR.
