What it is
This condition is an inherited eye disease that causes the gradual breakdown of the retina, which is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. It specifically targets both the cone cells, which handle daylight and color vision, and the rod cells, which are responsible for seeing in low light. As these specialized cells degenerate, the dog's ability to send visual signals to the brain steadily declines.
How it presents
Owners typically first notice signs of night blindness, such as hesitation or bumping into objects in dim light, with symptoms usually appearing between 1 and 5 years of age. Over time, the disease progresses to affect daytime vision, eventually leading to complete blindness.
Treatment
There is no cure to stop or reverse this progressive condition, though it is painless and dogs adapt well to vision loss. Lifelong supportive care, environmental adjustments, and veterinary check-ups typically cost between 500 and 2500 EUR.
