Overview
What it is
This is an inherited eye disease where the retina, which is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye, gradually degenerates. Due to a genetic mutation, the photoreceptor cells that process light slowly die off, leading to a progressive loss of vision. This condition is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, meaning a dog must inherit the mutated gene from both parents to develop the disease.
How it presents
Owners typically first notice night blindness or hesitancy in dim light, with symptoms usually appearing between 4 and 7 years of age. This slowly progresses to a loss of daytime vision, eventually resulting in complete blindness.
Treatment
There is no cure or treatment to stop the progression of this disease, though it is painless. Lifetime management, including veterinary check-ups and supportive care to help the dog adapt to vision loss, typically costs between 300 and 1,500 EUR.
