Congenital nystagmus
Also known as: Angeborener Nystagmus · Augenzittern · Pendular nystagmus · Involuntary eye oscillation
Overview
What it is
Congenital nystagmus is an involuntary, rhythmic drifting or twitching of the eyes that is present from birth. It is caused by a developmental abnormality in the neurological pathways that coordinate vision and balance between the eyes and the brain. This condition affects the ocular and nervous systems, but it does not worsen over time.
How it presents
Owners will typically notice rapid, constant back-and-forth or up-and-down eye movements starting in early puppyhood. Despite these unusual eye movements, affected dogs usually adapt remarkably well and show little to no noticeable vision impairment in their daily lives.
Treatment
The condition itself is incurable and generally requires no treatment, as affected dogs maintain an excellent quality of life. Veterinary costs typically range from 150 to 800 EUR, which primarily covers the initial ophthalmological and neurological examinations to confirm the diagnosis.
