Exophthalmos with strabismus
Also known as: Exophthalmus mit Strabismus · Exophthalmos and strabismus · Hereditary strabismus and exophthalmos · Schielen mit Augapfelvorfall
Overview
What it is
This condition is a structural malformation of the eyes and surrounding socket. It is characterized by exophthalmos, where the eyeballs protrude abnormally far forward, combined with strabismus, which is a misalignment of the eyes where they do not point in the same direction. This combination prevents the eyes from working together properly and can interfere with normal protective eye movements.
How it presents
Owners will typically notice that their dog's eyes look unusually prominent and misaligned, with symptoms usually becoming apparent during puppyhood. Because the eyelids may not close fully over the protruding eyes, you may also observe chronic tearing, squinting, or redness from corneal irritation.
Treatment
The condition is manageable with lifelong lubricating eye drops or corrective eyelid surgery to protect the surface of the eye. Treatment costs typically range from 500 to 3500 EUR depending on whether surgical intervention is required.
