Achromatopsia-2, CNGA3-related(ACHM)
Also known as: Achromatopsia 2 · Day Blindness · Cone Degeneration · CNGA3-related Achromatopsia · Tagblindheit · …
Overview
What it is
Achromatopsia is an inherited eye disorder affecting the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. It specifically impairs the cone photoreceptors, which are the specialized cells responsible for color vision and seeing in bright light. Because these cells do not function properly, affected dogs are nearly blind in bright daylight but can see normally in low-light conditions.
How it presents
Symptoms typically become noticeable in puppies between 8 and 12 weeks of age. Owners will often see their dog squinting, showing discomfort in bright sunlight, and bumping into outdoor obstacles while navigating easily indoors.
Treatment
While this condition is incurable, it is not painful. Lifelong management is focused on protecting the dog's eyes from bright light, with expected costs ranging from 300 to 1500 EUR for diagnostic confirmation and protective canine sunglasses.
