Gezüchtet aus dem "Old English Black and Tan Terrier", wurden der Bedlington zur Verbesserung des Wesens sowie der Border wegen seines drahtigen, Wasser abweisenden Haares eingekreuzt. Der mit viel Selbstvertrauen ausgestattete Lakeland hat ein unkompliziertes, fröhliches Wesen, das ihn zu einem sehr guten Familienhund macht.
