Dog Feeding Calculator
Calculate optimal food portions for your dog based on age, weight, and activity
Available
How the feeding amount is calculated
It starts with energy needs: body weight and life stage give a base calorie requirement, which is then adjusted by a factor for activity level and, where relevant, for neutering.
The daily calorie need is turned into grams using the energy density of the food type. The result is a solid guide — the figures on your specific food and your vet's advice take priority if in doubt.
Feeding amount questions, answered
How much should a puppy eat?
Puppies need far more energy per kilo of body weight than adults because they're growing, and the calculator accounts for that through life stage. Feed several small meals a day and a good-quality puppy food — the exact amount is usually printed on the manufacturer's packaging.
How much food does an adult dog need?
It depends on weight, age, activity and food type. As a rough guide, a medium, normally active dog needs about 2–3% of its body weight in dry food per day. The calculator turns that into a concrete number of grams.
Wet vs. dry food — how does the amount differ?
Wet food contains a lot of water and therefore fewer calories per gram. For the same amount of energy your dog needs considerably more wet food than dry. The calculator adjusts the grams automatically for the food type you pick.
How often a day should I feed?
Adult dogs are usually fed twice a day, young puppies three to four times. Fixed feeding times help digestion and house training. Wait about 30 minutes after eating before your dog does anything strenuous.
Should I adjust the amount for activity?
Yes. A very active or working dog needs noticeably more energy than a calm indoor dog, and neutered dogs often need slightly less. Check your dog's body condition regularly and adjust the amount — with your vet if you're unsure.
