Human years to dog years
The other way round: which dog age matches a given human age? This table reads the same formula backwards.
| Human years | Small | Medium | Large |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 | 2.0 years | 1.8 years | 1.4 years |
| 50 | 3.9 years | 3.2 years | 2.4 years |
| 60 | 6.4 years | 5.6 years | 4.4 years |
| 70 | 9.6 years | 8.5 years | 6.8 years |
| 80 | 13.2 years | 11.8 years | 9.2 years |
| 90 | 17.0 years | 15.2 years | 12.3 years |
Calculated backwards from the same formula. Few dogs ever reach the values above roughly 15 dog years — treat those rows as arithmetic, not as a life expectancy.
Why the 7-year rule is wrong
The familiar rule "1 dog year = 7 human years" is a rough simplification. Dogs don't age evenly: in their first year they reach sexual maturity and develop roughly as much as a human does by about age 15 — in just twelve months.
After those first, very fast couple of years, ageing slows down noticeably. A logarithmic formula (16 × ln(dog age) + 31) captures that curve far better than any fixed multiplier.
Size matters too: large and giant breeds age physically sooner and have a shorter life expectancy than small dogs. That's why the calculator adjusts the result for the size category.
Dog age questions, answered
How old is my dog in human years?
It depends on age and size. Instead of the old "times 7" rule, this calculator uses the logarithmic formula 16 × ln(dog age) + 31 and adjusts it for breed size. A one-year-old medium dog works out to roughly 31 human years, not 7.
How do I convert human years to dog years?
Read the same conversion the other way round: about 40 human years match roughly 1.8 dog years for a medium dog, 60 human years about 5.6, and 80 human years just under 12. Small dogs sit slightly above those figures and large dogs below — the "human years to dog years" table shows every value.
Is the 7-year rule true?
No. Dogs age very fast in their first two years and more slowly after that, so a flat factor of 7 doesn't fit. The rule of thumb underestimates young dogs and overestimates very old ones, which is why the calculator uses an age-dependent formula.
How long do small dogs live compared to large ones?
Smaller breeds usually live longer: toy and small dogs often reach 12–16 years, medium dogs 10–13, large dogs 8–12, and giant breeds frequently only 6–10 years. Larger dogs age physically sooner, so the calculator ages them faster.
How do I convert a puppy's age?
For dogs under one year the tool is closer to linear (about 15 human years per dog year in the first year), because puppies grow extremely quickly. Just enter the age in months and it converts automatically.
When is a dog considered a senior?
It's size-dependent. Large and giant breeds are often seniors from 6–8 years, while small breeds only reach that stage around 11–12. Once a dog is a senior, twice-yearly vet check-ups are a good idea.
How accurate is this calculator?
It gives a science-based estimate, not an exact diagnosis. Real ageing depends on genetics, diet, exercise and health. Use the result as a guide and talk to your vet about any specific health questions.
