What matters most
Especially with a Yakutian Laika, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.

When you are freezing in the depths of winter, their day is just getting started—they pull, work, and thrive where other dogs would have turned back long ago. You won't get blind obedience, but a piece of untamed nature that only joins you out of genuine respect.

A special feature of this breed is that they can also have different colored eyes, which is known as heterochromia. The ears are triangular, medium in size and erect, giving the Yakutskaya Laika an attentive and inquisitive look. The Yakutskaya Laika belongs to FCI Group 5, one of the top and archetypal dogs. The Yakutskaya Laika is an ancient, indigenous dog breed from the Siberian region of Yakutia in Russia. Since antiquity, the indigenous peoples of this extremely cold region have bred these robust dogs. Their original purpose was highly versatile: they primarily served as enduring sled dogs for transporting people and goods across vast, icy distances. Furthermore, they were used as reliable hunting dogs for seals, bears, and fur-bearing animals, as well as guard dogs for settlements. Their close bond with humans and the necessity to survive in temperatures far below freezing shaped a resilient and hardworking breed. With the rise of motorization in the 20th century, the population declined sharply until targeted conservation efforts began in the late 1990s. In 2004, the breed received official recognition from the Russian Kynological Federation (RKF). Internationally, the Yakutskaya Laika was provisionally recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in 2019 and classified within the Nordic sled dog group. Outside of Russia, the breed remains rare, though it is gaining popularity in sled dog sports.
The Yakutskaya Laika was used by the indigenous peoples of Yakutia as a sled and hunting dog, known for its adaptability to extreme climatic conditions.

The Yakutskaya Laika is an intelligent and hard-working animal that responds well to positive, reward-based training. They have a strong desire to please, which can make training easier, but they can also be independent and sometimes stubborn. These dogs definitely need something meaningful to do to be happy. Whether that's agility, pulling dog sports, or search and rescue exercises, they need an activity that utilizes their energy and intellect. On the other hand, it is important to make sure that the dog is not "over-busy" - rest periods and relaxation are just as important as activity and training. There could be a risk that they become 'ball junkies'. because they have a high prey drive. Therefore, it is important to ensure that games and activities are well balanced and that the dog does not become too obsessed with a single toy or game. Well-learned frustration tolerance and impulse control are also very helpful.
The Yakutskaya Laika tolerates a varied and balanced dog food very well. Although they have a strong appetite, they should not be overfed to avoid becoming overweight. A mixture of high-quality dry and wet food is optimal. Puppies should be fed special puppy food to support their growth and development. In terms of grooming, this breed has a thick undercoat that protects them from the harsh climatic conditions of their homeland. In Germany this can cause them to shed a little more during the warmer months, but regular brushing can help control this and keep their coat healthy. Their fur is otherwise easy to care for and requires minimal care outside of the shedding phases.
