Meinen Rüden zu adoptieren, war der Einstieg in eine völlig neue Welt der Hundehaltung. Man muss sich einfach darüber im Klaren sein, dass der Thai Ridgeback ein waschechter Urhund ist. Er verhält sich in vielen Dingen noch extrem ursprünglich und seine Kommunikation ist unglaublich fein und nuanciert. Das führt auf der Hundewiese leider regelmäßig zu Missverständnissen, weil andere, stärker domestizierte Hunde seine feine Körpersprache und Mimik überhaupt nicht richtig deuten können.
Er ist extrem wendig, kann aus dem Stand unfassbar hoch springen und ist ein absoluter Ausbrecherkönig. Wir mussten erst einmal ein spezielles Sicherheitsgeschirr kaufen, weil er sich aus normalen Geschirren im Handumdrehen rückwärts herausgewunden hat. Draußen ist sein Jagdtrieb die größte Herausforderung. Er jagen komplett auf Sicht, reagiert blitzschnell auf jede Bewegung und ist dann kaum noch zu bremsen.
Trotz dieser Wildheit im Freien ist er im Haus ein absolut treuer, sensibler und aufmerksamer Begleiter. Er fordert eine sehr feinfühlige Führung ohne jegliche Härte, sonst zieht er sich sofort zurück.

Wer sich einen Thai Ridgeback zulegt, sollte eine gehörige Portion Humor und Geduld mitbringen. Meine Hündin hat einen extremen Dickkopf. Wenn sie einen Sinn in einer Übung nicht sieht oder schlichtweg keine Lust hat, dann macht sie es nicht – da kann ich mich auf den Kopf stellen. Dazu kommt eine absolute Aversion gegen nasses Wetter. Sobald es regnet oder kalt ist, weigert sie sich beharrlich, auch nur einen Fuß vor die Tür zu setzen.
Eine der größten Hürden für uns war die Suche nach einer passenden Hundeschule. Viele Trainer sind mit diesem sehr eigenständigen, urtypischen Charakter völlig überfordert. Sobald dort mit zu viel Druck oder starren Methoden gearbeitet wird, schaltet der Thai komplett auf stur. Man braucht jemanden, der diesen stolzen Charakter versteht und über positive Motivation arbeitet.
Wenn man diese Hürde erst einmal genommen und ihr Vertrauen gewonnen hat, bekommt man einen unglaublich loyalen und aufmerksamen Partner, der eine ganz besondere, tiefe Bindung zu seinen Menschen aufbaut.

Unser Rüde zeigt ganz deutlich die typische Wachsamkeit und Reserviertheit der Rasse. Fremden Menschen gegenüber ist er extrem zurückhaltend, manchmal fast scheu. Er möchte von Fremden nicht einfach angefasst werden und weicht dann aus. Das muss man im Alltag respektieren und auch Besuchern von Anfang an klar kommunizieren.
Auch im Umgang mit anderen Hunden ist er nicht unkompliziert. Er neigt zu einer gewissen Dominanz und sucht sich seine Hundefreunde sehr genau aus. Wenn er auf andere selbstbewusste Rüden trifft, kann die Stimmung schnell kippen, weshalb man Situationen frühzeitig lesen und managen muss. Er ist definitiv kein Hund, den man einfach so auf der Hundewiese laufen lassen kann.
Er braucht sehr viel Bewegung und geistige Auslastung, um ausgeglichen zu sein. Für Anfänger ist diese Rasse meiner Meinung nach absolut nicht geeignet, da die Mischung aus Schüchternheit, Wachsamkeit und Jagdtrieb eine sehr konsequente, aber liebevolle Hand erfordert.
