Als wir uns nach einer langen Hundepause für eine spanische Wasserhündin entschieden haben, wussten wir, dass wir uns auf ein echtes Energiebündel einlassen. Die Welpenzeit war unglaublich anstrengend. Man unterschätzt leicht, wie viel Konsequenz man bei diesen niedlichen Knopfaugen aufbringen muss, um nicht schwach zu werden. Aber das konsequente Training hat sich ausgezahlt, und unsere Hündin ist heute eine wunderbare, wohlerzogene Begleiterin.
Allerdings haben wir in der Erziehung auch Fehler gemacht. Als sie klein war, fanden wir es lustig und putzig, wenn sie in der Stadt Tauben aufgescheucht hat. Das rächte sich schnell: Sie entwickelte einen ausgeprägten Jagdtrieb auf Vögel. Ihr das wieder abzugewöhnen, war um ein Vielfaches mühsamer, als es von Anfang an zu unterbinden.
Heute liebt sie das Wasser über alles, obwohl sie als Welpe erst gar keine Lust auf Schwimmen hatte. Man muss sich einfach bewusst sein, dass diese Hunde eine aktive Beschäftigung und klare Führung brauchen – dann hat man einen absolut loyalen Traumhund.

Wir haben uns für den Perro de Agua Español entschieden, weil er als allergikerfreundlich gilt und kaum haart. Das stimmt zwar – wir haben tatsächlich keine Haare auf dem Sofa –, aber die Fellpflege ist alles andere als unkompliziert. Man darf diese Hunde nicht bürsten oder kämmen, da das die Lockenstruktur zerstört. Stattdessen müssen sie regelmäßig komplett geschoren werden. Unsere normale Schermaschine ist im dichten, wolligen Fell ständig stecken geblieben und heiß gelaufen. Ich musste mir schließlich ein extrem kraftvolles Modell zulegen, das fast schon für Schafe geeignet ist.
Eine weitere, oft unterschätzte Baustelle sind die Ohren. Da die Haare beim spanischen Wasserhund auch tief im Gehörgang wachsen, müssen wir die Ohren regelmäßig gründlich auszupfen und freischneiden. Macht man das nicht, kommt keine Luft an den Gehörgang, und man hat ganz schnell mit schmerzhaften Ohrentzündungen und den typischen 'Stinkeöhrchen' zu kämpfen.
Wer sich diese Rasse anschafft, sollte also Lust auf ein spezielles Pflege-Programm haben. Ansonsten ist unser Rüde ein unfassbar treuer, sportlicher Kerl, der für jeden Spaß zu haben ist, solange er geistig und körperlich ausgelastet wird.

Unser Rüde kommt aus dem Tierschutz, und wir mussten schnell lernen, dass der Spanische Wasserhund kein einfacher 'Nebenbei-Hund' ist. Viele Menschen sehen nur das wuschelige, teddybärartige Aussehen, vergessen aber, dass in ihnen ein ernsthafter Hüte- und Wachhund steckt. Unser Perro hat einen stark ausgeprägten Schutztrieb. Fremden gegenüber ist er extrem misstrauisch und neigt dazu, unser Grundstück lautstark zu verteidigen. Wenn man am Zaun vorbeigeht, schlägt er sofort an.
Besonders bei Hunden aus dem Tierschutz muss man wissen: Perros haben ein phänomenales Langzeitgedächtnis. Schlechte Erfahrungen vergessen sie so schnell nicht. Wenn sie sich bedrängt oder unsicher fühlen, neigen manche dazu, nach vorne zu gehen, anstatt zu weichen. Es erfordert enorm viel Geduld, Konsequenz und Hundeerfahrung, um einem unsicheren Perro Sicherheit zu vermitteln.
Für Anfänger ohne Unterstützung oder für Menschen, die einen unkomplizierten Begleiter suchen, ist die Rasse meiner Meinung nach nicht geeignet. Wer sich aber auf ihren Charakter einlässt und ihnen die nötige Führung gibt, bekommt einen extrem loyalen Partner fürs Leben.
