Relative to other breeds
The Swedish Lapphund is inherently a robust and hardy breed, but it comes with an above-average list of mandatory health tests. Eye health is a particular focus, as conditions such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA-PRCD) and cataracts must be consistently monitored. The risk of Hip Dysplasia (HD) also requires a close look at the parents' X-ray results before purchasing a puppy.

What matters most
Especially with a Swedish Lapphund, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.
See HonestDog breeder standards →The Swedish Lapphund is an intelligent, extremely weather-resistant companion—bred as a vocal Hütehund (herding dog) that kept reindeer herds together in the vast expanses of Scandinavia and alerted its owners to predators early on.
The real vibes check
A Swedish Lapphund is not a quiet follower, but rather the attentive foreman of your family. If you accept that it will vocally comment on its surroundings, you will gain an incredibly loyal nature enthusiast. If you view its vocal vigilance not as a flaw but as a heritage to be appreciated, you will gain a buddy for every adventure, no matter how rough.
The Swedish Lapphund, also known as “Svensk lapphund”, is a medium-sized dog with a dense, wavy coat of fur. Its deep black coat color and the bushy tail, which often curls over its back, are typical characteristics of this breed. The Lapphund belongs to FCI Group 5, the Spitz and archetype dogs, more precisely to Section 3, the Nordic guard and herding dogs. Its physique is strong and well proportioned, which makes it very resistant to the harsh climatic conditions in its homeland. Unlike many other breeds, there is no distinction between performance and show lines in the Swedish Lapphund. All Lapphunds are working dogs and family dogs at the same time and thus retain their original and versatile nature.
The roots of the Swedish Lapphund go back a long way and are closely linked to the Sami, the indigenous people of Lapland. The Sami people have used these dogs as herding dogs for their reindeer herds for centuries. They valued their intelligence, alertness and endurance, qualities that were crucial in the harsh and often inhospitable environment. The Swedish Lapphund was officially recognized as a separate breed in 1944. The breed is very popular in Sweden, but is rarely found outside of its home country.
The Swedish Lapphund was used by the Sami as a herding dog for reindeer herds, known for its endurance and adaptability to cold climates.
Sweden
Antike
The Swedish Lapphund is an alert, eager-to-learn dog with a strong work ethic. Its original purpose as a herding dog is still clearly visible in its character today. He is very attached to his people and enjoys working with them. At the same time, he also has a certain degree of independence that he needs for his role as a herding dog. Despite his enthusiasm for work, the Lapphund is not a hyperactive dog. He has a balanced temperament and can adapt well to different life situations. It is a versatile companion that can accommodate both physical activities and quieter phases etching white. The Swedish Lapphund is a very people-oriented dog. He loves spending time with his family and enjoys being around them. He generally gets along well with children and is often very patient with them. He can be a bit reserved towards strangers at first, but quickly warms up when he realizes that they pose no danger. Even though the Lapphund can certainly learn to stay alone, this should not become the rule. He needs the company of his humans and feels most comfortable when included in their activities. The Lapphund shows a moderate hunting instinct. However, this can be easily managed through consistent education and offering alternatives. It is still advisable to exercise caution in the presence of small animals or game. As a good watchdog, the Swedish Lapphund is always attentive and vigilant. He reliably reports when something unusual occurs, but is not prone to barking for no reason. He uses his voice in a targeted manner and is generally easy to control.
| Trainability Picks up commands quickly and wants to please. | Eager to learn |
| Watchfulness Reports unusual activity but stays controlled. | Moderate |
| Openness to Strangers Warms up quickly and is generally welcoming. | Friendly |
| Hunting or Herding Drive Mild interest in movement and small animals — easily managed. | Low |

The Swedish Lapphund is an intelligent, eager to learn and willing to work dog that likes to be challenged. It is therefore important to offer him something meaningful to do in order to avoid under-challenge and boredom. Activities such as agility, obedience or nose work are ideal here. Training should always be positive and varied, as the Lapphund quickly becomes bored if the exercises become too monotonous. In addition, emphasis should be placed on good socialization and learning impulse control at an early stage. A high frustration tolerance is also beneficial when dealing with this dog. Although the Lapphund has a high level of work motivation and a strong urge to move, care should always be taken to ensure that he is not overwhelmed. Dogs also need rest periods to process what they have learned and to recover.
A Swedish Lapphund, like any dog, has individual nutritional needs based on factors such as age, weight, health and activity level. A balanced diet rich in high-quality proteins, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals helps keep the dog healthy and active. Grooming the Swedish Lapphund requires a little more effort due to its dense, wavy coat with an undercoat. This fur serves as a natural protection against the cold, which is why the Lapphund also copes well with the German climate. However, he sheds quite heavily, especially during the shedding phases in spring and autumn. Regular brushing is important to prevent tangles and keep skin healthy.
| Care Level Regular brushing and occasional professional grooming. | Moderate |
| Exercise Needs Needs several hours of serious exercise every day. | Very active |
| Shedding Hair everywhere, always — no white clothing survives. | Very heavy |
| Trainability Picks up commands quickly and wants to please. | Eager to learn |
