What matters most
Especially with a Rafeiro do Alentejo, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.

The real vibes check
A Rafeiro do Alentejo is not a dog for a sidewalk café—he is the stoic bouncer of your property. He may rest in the sun appearing sleepy during the day, but if he perceives a threat at night, that calm instantly shifts into uncompromising defense. You are not getting a dog that just follows orders, but an independent security expert whose respect you must first earn.
The Rafeiro do Alentejo is an impressive large dog with a powerful build. The breed belongs to FCI Group 2 and, as a mastiff, is a typical Molosser. Its strong head and broad skull are striking. The ears are medium sized and drooping, the eyes are oval and expressive. The neck is strong and the back is wide and straight. The tail is long and is carried in a slight curve. The Rafeiro do Alentejo's coat is dense and straight, with a medium-length undercoat that protects it from the elements. The FCI recognizes four color variants: black, yellow, gray and brindle, although all colors can appear with white markings.
The roots of Rafeiro do Alentejo lie in the Portuguese Alentejo, a region known for its vast landscapes and hot summers. The exact origin of the breed is unknown, but it is believed to have descended from ancient Molossian dogs that came to the region with the Romans. The Rafeiro do Alentejo was traditionally used as a guard and protection dog for herds and farms, and its strength and endurance made it an effective protector against predators and intruders. Although the Rafeiro do Alentejo has been known as a working dog in the Alentejo for centuries, it was only recognized as a separate breed in the mid-20th century. In 1953 the first breed standard was established and in 1957 the breed was officially recognized by the Portuguese Kennel Club. Today the Rafeiro do Alentejo is relatively widespread in Portugal, but it is still rare to find outside of its home country.
The Rafeiro do Alentejo was bred as a livestock guard dog to protect livestock from predators and thieves.
