As an original working breed, the Posavski Gonic is genetically very robust, which is why there are hardly any known breed-specific hereditary diseases. Nevertheless, buyers should look for hip dysplasia (HD) screenings to prevent joint pain later in life. Additionally, due to their long, floppy ears, there is an increased risk of painful ear infections.

What matters most
Especially with a Posavac Hound, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.
See HonestDog breeder standards →The Posavski Gonic is a robust, highly passionate hunter—bred as a tireless Laufhund (scent hound) and a specialist in tracking with a loud bark, capable of independently following the trails of foxes and wild boars through dense Croatian brush.
The real vibes check
At home, the Posavski Gonic often acts like a gentle cuddle bug who prefers to doze on the sofa—but as soon as he picks up a trail outside, he flips a switch and becomes a tireless hunting machine. You aren't getting a companion dog that reads your every wish from your eyes, but rather a highly specialized outdoorsman whose greatest happiness lies at the tip of his nose.
The Posavski Gonic is a robust and athletic dog known for its remarkable endurance and strong hunting instinct. It belongs to FCI Group 6, which includes scent hounds, bloodhounds and related breeds. Its compact build allows it to work in a variety of terrains, and its short, dense coat provides it with protection from harsh weather conditions. His expression is alert and lively, reflecting his high intelligence and attentive nature. Unlike some other breeds, the Posavski Gonic has no distinction between show and performance lines. This is because this breed is bred primarily for its working abilities rather than its looks.
The Posavski Gonics are an ancient dog breed from Croatia that was originally used for hunting wild boars and other large game species. The name "Posavski Gonic" is derived from the Posavina region, an area stretching along the Sava River in Croatia. The breed has its roots in a variety of hounds that were common in the region during the Middle Ages. They have been bred for centuries to improve their hunting skills and stamina. The Posavski Gonics were recognized as a separate breed in 1955 and are still very popular in their homeland, although they are less well known outside of Croatia.
The Posavski Gonič was bred to hunt hares and other small game in the Sava valleys and is characterized by its endurance and good sense of smell.

The Posavski Gonics are known for their gentle and friendly nature. They are very people-oriented and form close bonds with their family. Despite their hunting nature, they are often calm and relaxed at home and get along well with children and other pets. Their balanced temperament makes them good companion dogs for active families. However, they are also independent dogs that are able to make decisions and solve problems independently. This was an important trait for their work as hunting dogs, but can cause challenges in a household if not managed properly. The Posavski Gonics are very energetic and need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. They are very persistent and love long walks, runs or hikes. Their intelligence and eagerness make them excellent candidates for dog sports such as agility or tracking. A characteristic feature of the breed is its strong hunting instinct. They were bred to hunt wild boars and other large game and have a strong tracking and hunting instinct. This can mean that they have a tendency to chase or pursue prey if not properly trained and directed. Although the Posavski Gonics are generally good at staying alone, their attachment to their family can cause them to develop separation anxiety if left alone for long periods of time. Therefore, it is important to teach them to stay alone from puppyhood. As hunting dogs, the Posavski Gonics are alert and attentive. They are likely to react to suspicious noises or movements and can therefore make good watchdogs. However, they are generally not aggressive and tend to be friendly towards strangers once they realize they are not a threat. In conclusion, the Posavski Gonic is a loyal, loving and active dog that forms a close bond with its family. With the right training and guidance, it makes a wonderful companion for active people or families who love the outdoors. His gentle and friendly nature, coupled with his energy and endurance, make him a dog that can be both a working partner and a loving family friend.

The Posavski Gonič is a robust and enduring hunting dog from Croatia. It is characterized by its high enthusiasm for work and its pronounced sense of smell. These dogs are very eager to learn and require consistent but loving training. The Posavski Gonič is a loyal companion that is well suited as a family dog if it receives sufficient exercise and activity. Its short, low-maintenance coat also makes it an uncomplicated partner in everyday life.
The Posavski Gonic is a high-energy dog that requires plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to be happy and balanced. Therefore, he is best suited to a home with a large, fenced yard where he can run around freely and let off his energy. Although he can adapt to a city apartment as long as he gets enough exercise, he would definitely be happier in a rural setting. This dog is known for its friendliness and tolerance. He generally gets along well with children and can be a wonderful family dog. Still, it's always important to supervise interactions between dogs and small children to ensure both are safe. In relation to other pets, the Posavski Gonic usually displays friendly behavior, although its hunting instinct may lead it to hunt smaller animals. Therefore, it is important to properly socialize and train him from an early age to ensure harmonious coexistence with other pets.

Owning a dog is a privilege, but it's also a real responsibility. Before you bring one into your life, be honest with yourself about the commitment it takes.!
As a hunting dog, the Posavski Gonic has a keen sense of smell and a natural drive to search and pursue. This can be used in various dog sports, such as nose work or tracking, where he can put his skills and eagerness to use. It's important to meet the mental and physical demands of this active dog to avoid behavioral problems. This can be achieved through daily exercises, training sessions and mental stimulation. However, you should be careful not to overstress the dog. A good balance between activity and rest time is crucial. In terms of training, the Posavski Gonic is an intelligent dog that learns quickly and enjoys working. He responds well to positive reinforcement and reward-based training techniques. It's important to keep the training varied and interesting to keep his attention. Despite his willingness to work, the Posavski Gonic can be quite stubborn, which can make training him a challenge. It is important to be patient and consistent. You should also be aware that this dog requires high frustration tolerance and impulse control, especially when his hunting instinct is awakened.
The Posavski Gonic's diet should be balanced and nutritious to maintain its energy and health. They need a diet high in high-quality proteins to support their muscle mass, as well as sufficient carbohydrates for energy. Some owners prefer commercial dog food, while others prefer a raw or homemade diet. No matter which method you choose, it's important that your dog's diet contains all the nutrients it needs. When it comes to grooming, the Posavski Gonic is quite easy to care for. He has a short, dense coat with an undercoat that requires minimal grooming. A weekly Brushing is usually enough to keep the coat clean and healthy and preserve its natural shine. During molting periods, which typically occur twice a year, hair loss may be more intense and therefore may require more frequent grooming. This dog is adapted to the climate of its native Croatia, where it endures both hot summers and cold winters. Thanks to its undercoat, it is also well protected against the cold in Germany. However, it is important to note that in very hot temperatures he may need additional support to avoid overheating.

Was soll ich sagen?
